Groundhog Day

1. What is ground hog day?

Groundhog Day is a day where people use groundhogs to predict if spring will come early. If the groundhog sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of miserable winter like conditions. If it doesn't see it's shadow then there will be six more spring-like weeks. The very first Groundhog Day took place on Feb 2nd 1887. Groundhog day originated from an ancient christian tradition of Candle-mas Day. The clergy would distribute candles and however long the candles were was how long winter would be. Germans expanded on that by using a hedgehog and once they settled in Pennsylvania they switched to ground hogs.
